Delapre Park

The River Nene cuts through Delapre Park like a ribbon of green through Northampton's southern edge, and it's genuinely one of the town's better-kept secrets. Once the grounds of a grand medieval abbey, the park now sprawls across 170 acres of parkland, woodland, and riverside habitat - proper old-school countryside sitting right on the town's doorstep.

You get a mix of things here. There are open meadows where you can actually breathe, a decent stretch of riverbank for ambling along, and woodland paths that feel properly removed despite the urban setting just beyond the perimeter. The abbey remains are low-key - not dramatic stonework like Tintern, more atmospheric than spectacular - but they add historical weight to what's essentially a walker's and nature-spotter's park. Birdwatchers will find the riverside sections worthwhile, especially during migration seasons.

Families with younger kids might find an hour or two enough before they're ready to move on elsewhere, though older children and serious walkers could easily spend half a day here. It's free to access and open year-round, making it a proper no-brains addition to a Northamptonshire caravan break.

Staying at Billing Aquadrome or Riverview Park - both just 3-4 miles north - means you've got Delapre on your doorstep without fighting through town traffic. It pairs well with the leisure facilities at Billing itself, giving you variety without endless driving. Come in spring for wildflowers and nesting birds, or autumn when the woodland colours actually justify the trip.
