The Hirsel Estate

The Hirsel Estate spreads across several hundred acres just outside Coldstream, and it's one of those places that rewards a proper wander. You get woodland walks, open grassland, a small loch, and genuinely decent birdwatching opportunities - I counted at least three woodpecker species on my last visit, though I'll admit I was lucky with the light.

It's managed as a nature reserve now, which means the paths are well-kept without feeling manicured. The main draw is the mix of habitats: dense plantations give way to scrubland, then open water. In spring the wildflowers along the woodland edges are worth the trip alone. Allow two to three hours if you want to cover the main circuits without rushing.

History buffs might note the estate's aristocratic pedigree - there's a lodge somewhere in the grounds - but this isn't a stately home tour. Come for the birds and the trees. Families with younger kids can manage the easier loops without trouble, though muddy stretches are inevitable even after light rain.

Admission is free, which is proper generous given the upkeep. It sits nicely alongside Coldstream Holiday Park if you're basing yourself there for a few days - close enough for a morning or afternoon jaunt, far enough removed that it feels like a real escape from the caravan site. Peak visiting is May through September, though October can be genuinely beautiful if you catch good weather.
