The Gruffalo

The Gruffalo gallery sits just outside Inverness and is basically a celebration of Julia Donaldson's beloved picture book brought to life. It's not a massive space - you're looking at an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're with young children who want to linger over every illustration and interactive bit. The gallery features original artwork, character displays, and plenty of hands-on activities designed for the under-tens crowd. Parents will find the gift shop reasonably priced and the whole thing mercifully free from the sort of commercial hard-sell that plagues some children's attractions.

Families with picture book obsessives will absolutely get their money's worth here. Older kids or adults without an attachment to the book might find it a touch thin on substance, but the illustrations are genuinely well-executed. It works nicely as a half-day activity when you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Ardtower is particularly close at just over a mile away, or Go Glamping at Loch Ness if you fancy something more upmarket.

Timing-wise, aim for mid-morning to avoid the school holiday rush. The Highland light in autumn is proper beautiful if you time it right, and the location means you can easily combine it with other Inverness attractions or a proper walk along the lochs. It's not the sort of place that'll captivate teenagers or non-readers, but for families with young children, it's a solid rainy-day option that won't leave you feeling shortchanged.
