The Green Park

The Green Park is one of those London spaces that feels properly separate from the city the moment you walk in, even though you're never more than a few hundred metres from Piccadilly or Buckingham Palace. It's 53 acres of tree-lined paths, open grassland, and surprising quiet - the kind of place where you'll actually hear birds instead of traffic. The park has a gentler feel than its neighbour St James's, with fewer formal gardens and more of the windswept, rambling character you'd hope for from a proper green space in the middle of town.

Walking the perimeter takes about forty minutes if you're not stopping, though most people drift between the Memorial to the Royal Artillery, the Rose Garden (decent in June), and the open lawns where office workers sprawl during lunch. There's no lake or dramatic features, which is partly the point - it's a breathing space, not a destination. Families with young children will find it pleasant enough for a stroll and a picnic, though kids after novelty might get bored once they've run the length of the main lawn. History types will appreciate the various memorials scattered throughout, though interpretation is minimal.

Admission is free and it's open from dawn to dusk year-round. If you're staying at Lovat Parks just down the road, this is an easy morning walk before heading into the West End. Best visited weekday mornings when the tourist crowds haven't arrived and you might genuinely enjoy some space to think.
