The Green Bothy (ruin)

A crumbling stone shelter on the edge of moorland, The Green Bothy sits waiting for you somewhere between Newtonmore and wilderness. It's not much - four walls, a roof that's seen better decades, and the kind of quiet that only comes when you're properly away from things.

This is a working ruin rather than a museum piece. Bothies like this were built as emergency shelters for shepherds and estate workers across the Highlands, and this one's still standing, which is more than can be said for dozens of others. The walls are rough Highland stone, weathered grey and moss-covered. Inside, you'll find it's been maintained as a basic refuge - the sort of place that matters more to hillwalkers and outdoor types than to casual tourists.

It's not a destination in itself, frankly. You don't drive to The Green Bothy and spend an afternoon. What you do is walk there - it fits naturally into longer moorland routes from Newtonmore - and feel that particular satisfaction of finding something real and functional rather than heritage-packaged. The approach alone is worth it for the landscape.

History enthusiasts get something genuine here: evidence of how rural life actually worked in the Highlands, not a sanitised version. Walkers will appreciate it as a waypoint and a bit of shelter if weather turns. Families with young kids might find the journey more interesting than the destination itself.

Free to visit, naturally. Allow two to three hours for a decent walk out and back. If you're staying at Invernahavon Caravan Park nearby, it's a solid half-day expedition that beats the usual tourist trail.
