Wildcat Centre

The Wildcat Centre sits just outside Newtonmore and is basically your chance to get up close with Scotland's rarest cat. You'll see the Scottish wildcat - a proper fierce wee creature that's about the size of a domestic moggy but with absolutely none of the friendliness. It's educational without feeling like a school trip, which matters when you're on a family holiday.

What you get here is access to viewing areas where you can watch these animals doing their thing, plus information panels that explain why they're so critically endangered. The breeding programme they run here is genuinely important work - there are maybe only a few hundred left in the wild. Most visitors spend an hour here, maybe ninety minutes if the cats are being particularly active.

Historically minded folk will find this interesting because it's part of Scotland's broader conservation story. Families with kids aged six and up will get something from it, though younger ones might lose interest if the cats aren't on show. It's free to visit, which is brilliant value given what they're doing.

Newtonmore itself is a decent highland village with shops and a chippy. If you're staying at Invernahavon Caravan Park - just three miles away - or Laggan Glamping further out, the Wildcat Centre makes a sensible half-day stop. It's not a full day out, but it breaks up a longer drive well and leaves you time to explore the Cairngorms properly afterwards.
