The Great House

You'll find The Great House tucked into Burford's compact high street - a Grade I listed building that actually stops you mid-stride because it's so obviously Georgian and rather magnificent. Built in the 18th century, it's the sort of property that makes you understand why property developers get excited about Cotswolds real estate. The architectural detailing alone is worth the detour if you're into that sort of thing - the stonework and proportions are properly done.

What you're really looking at is a snapshot of how the wealthy lived in a prosperous market town. The house speaks volumes about Burford itself during its heyday as a coaching stop. It's not a museum you queue for or fork out entrance fees to explore inside - this is appreciation from the street, though the craftsmanship is evident enough to make ten minutes worthwhile. The honey-coloured stone catches the light beautifully in the late afternoon.

History enthusiasts will get more out of this than most, particularly those interested in Georgian architecture and how old English towns evolved. Kids might find it a bit static unless they're already keen on buildings. Give yourself half an hour if you're wandering Burford's streets properly.

If you're based at Wysdom Touring Park just down the road, or Burford Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, it's barely worth planning as a separate trip - simply stop by when exploring the town itself. Burford rewards a proper wander anyway, and The Great House anchors the sense of the place.
