The Glack

You'll find yourself standing on a hillside near Erigmore, looking at what amounts to a series of grass-covered lumps and bumps - and that's precisely what makes The Glack rather special. This is an Iron Age hill fort, though 'fort' might conjure images of palisades and dramatic ramparts. What you're actually seeing are the worn remains of defensive earthworks, now softened by time and Scottish moorland vegetation.

The site itself sits at decent elevation, affording proper views across Perthshire. Walking the perimeter takes a decent chunk of an hour, depending on how thoroughly you poke about. It's the kind of place that appeals most to serious archaeology enthusiasts and local history buffs rather than casual tourists - don't expect information boards or reconstructions. You're essentially reading the landscape itself, which is either brilliant or frustrating depending on your inclination.

Access appears to be unrestricted, making it entirely free. There's no visitor facility or café, so you'll want to be equipped properly if you're staying at Inver Mill Farm Caravan Park or Erigmore Holiday Park, both within a couple of miles. Neither park is particularly far away, making The Glack a reasonable half-day excursion if you're based locally.

It's not dramatic or Instagram-friendly, but if you're genuinely interested in how people fortified their settlements two millennia ago, the effort to get up here and work out what you're looking at is genuinely worthwhile.
