The George Inn

The George Inn sits right on Langport's high street, a proper medieval coaching house that's been doing its job for about 600 years. Walk past and you'll clock the timber framing, the uneven floors inside, and that particular smell of old wood and ale that never quite leaves a place like this. It's still very much a working pub - you can get a pint, a meal, and a sense of what Georgian Somerset actually felt like when horses pulled carts through town.

What makes it worth stopping for is the building itself rather than any grand exhibition. The architecture tells the story - low ceilings, wonky doorways, the kind of layout that makes you realise how differently people moved through space centuries ago. You're looking at real Tudor and Stuart craftsmanship, not a reconstructed version. History buffs will spend a good thirty minutes nosing about, reading the plaques, maybe chatting to staff if they're in the mood. Families with younger kids might find it less gripping - there's no interactive stuff or activities, just a proper old inn being itself.

Calling ahead's probably sensible to check current opening hours, though as it's an operational pub, it should be open most afternoons and evenings. Admission's free if you're just popping in for a look, though they'll expect you to buy something. It works brilliantly as a pit stop if you're based at Thorney Lakes or Esme's Escape for the caravan park holiday - combine it with a wander round Langport's riverside and you've got a decent half-day sorted.
