Four Acre Plantation

Four Acre Plantation sits quietly on the Somerset Levels just outside Langport, and it's the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. Woodland on flat terrain isn't dramatic, but there's something rather calming about walking through these trees when you're supposed to be bracing for moorland or coastal drama.

It's a straightforward woodland walk - nothing more, nothing less. The paths are manageable and the canopy decent enough if you need shelter from drizzle. Kids will tolerate it for twenty minutes or so before asking when you're stopping for crisps. Dog walkers, though, tend to stick around longer. The open nature of the Levels means you get odd moments where the trees open up and you can see across the flat landscape - those brief glimpses are oddly lovely.

Being free and essentially unmanaged, there's no visitor infrastructure. Bring what you need. Go in autumn when the light filters through properly, or early spring before the midges settle in for summer.

If you're camping at Thorney Lakes or 5 Acres on the Somerset Levels - both genuinely solid parks - this fills a rainy afternoon or the hour before dinner without requiring a car journey. Thornhills Holiday Park is a bit further out but still within reasonable distance. The Levels attract people after flatness and wildlife, not adventure, and Four Acre Plantation suits that mood precisely. It won't thrill you. But it won't disappoint either, provided you're realistic about what a small plantation offers.
