The Friendship Tree

There's an ancient oak tree standing in Nottinghamshire that's been around longer than most of us care to think about, and it carries a story worth the trip from Nottingham. The Friendship Tree is exactly what it sounds like - a sprawling, gnarled specimen with serious character and real historical weight. You can actually walk right up to it, put your hand on the bark, and feel how old this thing really is.

It's the sort of place that appeals to anyone with a soft spot for natural history or local heritage. Families with older kids who aren't easily bored will find something genuine here - no theme park nonsense, just a tree that's seen centuries go by. Photographers show up regularly too, especially when the light's right in late afternoon. The surrounding landscape is lovely for a bit of a wander, nothing strenuous.

This works brilliantly as a half-morning stop if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks. Nottingham Camping and Caravanning Club Site and Little Bunny Retreat are both within easy striking distance, so you could easily combine it with exploring Nottingham itself or visiting other local attractions. Shelford Nurseries Caravan Park is barely six miles away as well.

Access seems straightforward and it's free to visit, though do check locally before you go - opening hours and facilities information aren't widely published. Go on a weekday if you want some peace and quiet. It's not a three-hour affair, but it's worth the detour.
