The Food Museum

The Food Museum sits just outside Ipswich and does exactly what it says on the tin - takes you through how Britain's food gets from farm to table. You'll wander through exhibits covering everything from Victorian kitchens to modern food production, with plenty of hands-on bits that actually engage rather than bore.

Kids tend to spend a good couple of hours here, poking at interactive displays and getting a genuine sense of where their dinner comes from. Adults find themselves surprisingly drawn in by the social history angle - there's something oddly compelling about seeing how radically food storage and cooking have changed in living memory. The museum doesn't pretend to be flashy, which is rather refreshing.

Allow two to three hours if you're being thorough, though you can knock it down to ninety minutes if you're moving quickly. Worth checking their website for admission costs before you go, as it's not entirely clear what the current charges are. Opening hours shift seasonally - they're open Tuesday to Sunday (and Mondays on bank holidays) from April through October, then revert to shorter days from November onwards.
