The dog field

The Dog Field near Burry Port is exactly what it sounds like - a proper coastal nature reserve where locals take their dogs to run about while you get proper views across the Carmarthenshire coastline. It's a working landscape more than a manicured attraction; salt marsh, rough grassland, and that bracing sea air that makes you remember why you came to Wales.

What you're actually doing here is walking. There are tracks through the reserve, nothing demanding, and you'll spot waders if you time it right with the tides. Bring binoculars if you're into birds - the place punches above its weight for watching. On a clear day you can see right across to Gower. On a grey day (likely) it's moody and atmospheric in that way only Welsh coastline manages.

It's free, and there's no gatehouse or visitor centre nonsense. Just park sensibly and go. You'll need an hour minimum, longer if you're the lingering type or you've got dogs that need proper exercise. Families with restless kids might find it a bit thin on the ground for entertainment - there's no café, no facilities, just nature and space.

Stay at Pembrey Country Park Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite (4.8 miles away, genuinely highly rated) and you've got this on your doorstep alongside proper beach access. It's the kind of place that works best as part of a broader coastal potter rather than a destination in itself. Worth an afternoon if you're in the area, not worth driving hours for alone.
