The Dodd

The Dodd rises up from the eastern shore of Ullswater, a proper little fell that punches well above its weight for effort versus reward. At 502 metres, it's no epic undertaking - most people bag it in under two hours from the car park at Glenridding, though the final push gets steep enough to make you feel like you've earned the view. And what a view: you're looking straight down the length of Ullswater, with Helvellyn dominating the western skyline and the Pennines rolling away to the east. On a clear day it's genuinely one of the best vantage points in this corner of the Lakes. The walk itself follows a well-trodden path that climbs through woodland before opening out onto the fell. It's boggy in places - especially after rain - so good boots matter, but nothing technical or exposed. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might find the scramble at the end a bit much. Walkers who want something quick and satisfying without a full-day commitment should make this their target. You're free to roam up here obviously, no fees, no gates. Best visited outside peak summer weekends if you want any peace. If you're staying at one of the caravan parks dotted around Penrith - Park Foot is closest - The Dodd makes an excellent morning outing before heading back for lunch. It's not the Lake District's most famous summit, which rather suits it.
