The Devils Porridge

During the First World War, this stretch of Dumfriesshire became home to one of Britain's most secretive munitions factories - a sprawling complex where workers mixed TNT and other explosives so volatile the locals called the process 'Devil's Porridge'. The site, just outside Wigton, tells the story of how ordinary men and women worked in genuinely dangerous conditions to produce millions of shells for the Western Front.

You walk around what remains of the factory buildings and get a proper sense of the scale of the operation. Exhibition spaces explain the chemistry behind the work, the workforce's daily reality, and the occasional disasters that happened despite strict safety rules. It's not a theme park - there's no theatrical reconstruction - but the remnants themselves are genuinely compelling. The landscape still bears the scars of industrial wartime production.

History enthusiasts and anyone with a genuine interest in how Britain mobilised for war will find it absorbing. Families with teenagers work well here; younger kids might lose interest after forty minutes unless they're keen on industrial history. The walk around the site takes about ninety minutes if you're thorough.

If you're basing yourself at Cressfield Caravan Park, this makes a solid afternoon visit - close enough for a half-day trip but substantial enough to warrant the drive.
