The Devils Hole

A narrow ravine slices through the chalk downland near Warlingham, and you drop into it like you're stepping into another world. The Devil's Hole is properly dramatic - steep sides, dense woodland, and a stream that's carved this chasm over millennia. It's only a short walk from the car park, but the path gets steep and muddy, so decent boots matter.

What you actually get here is the walk itself more than a destination. The ravine opens up as you descend, and the scale of it becomes clear - you're standing in something genuinely old, shaped by water and time. The stream runs year-round, which means it's never completely dry, but after heavy rain the mud can be shocking. In summer it's pleasant enough, with enough green overhead to keep things cool.

History types will appreciate the geology - it's a proper lesson in chalk erosion written into the landscape. Families with younger kids might find twenty minutes enough; walkers passing through on a longer route will integrate it easily. Teenagers often get a kick out of the slight drama of scrambling down the narrow sections.

Since it's free and takes maybe half an hour round trip, it works well as a morning stop before heading to one of the nearby parks. Milberry Green Meadows or Alderstead Heath are both close enough for a quick detour. Not somewhere to plan a full day around, but worth the five-minute deviation if you're in the area with proper footwear.
