The Deer Park

The Deer Park sits just outside Horsham in Surrey, and it's one of those places that catches you off guard - you'll round a corner and suddenly there they are, fallow and muntjac deer roaming what feels like properly open countryside. It's not a zoo setup with barriers everywhere. You can walk among the animals, feed them if you've got the right food, and it genuinely feels like stepping into someone's private estate rather than a tourist trap.

Families with younger kids get the most from it. There's something about hand-feeding a deer that keeps children engaged for a good hour or so, longer if the animals are cooperative. Older kids and adults who fancy a decent countryside walk will appreciate the broader grounds - you can clock a couple of hours here easily if you make it part of a longer route. The pace is entirely yours.

Practically speaking, it's free to enter, though donations are requested. There's no formal admission fee that we could find. Parking is straightforward, and it's worth arriving earlier in the day when the deer are most active - they tend to retreat in strong heat.

Camp locally at Sands Farm Weekend Camping, barely a mile away, or push slightly further to Slinfold Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite at under three miles. Either makes for a gentle morning stop before or after exploring the Weald. It's not a full-day attraction on its own, but combined with a walk and nearby village pubs, it rounds out a proper Surrey countryside day.
