The Deepdene Trail

A proper woodland walk through chalky Surrey countryside, the Deepdene Trail winds through beech and yew trees with glimpses of the North Downs beyond. It's the kind of place where you'll actually hear birdsong instead of traffic - and mean it. The trail follows a stream valley south of Tadworth, with steep sections that'll get your heart going without being brutal, and enough open spaces to remind you why you left town.

This is walker territory, not a casual stroll. Bring decent shoes because the ground gets muddy and the chalk underneath shifts underfoot. Families with older kids will manage fine; under-eights might find the length testing unless they're the outdoor type. History buffs won't find much here - no ruins or plaques, just proper nature - but botanists will clock the chalk flora dotted between the trees.

No idea about admission fees, but most Surrey nature reserves run on the honour system or are completely free. Allow two to three hours depending on how often you stop to breathe. Go in autumn when the beech trees turn gold, or spring when the bluebells come through. Summer gets busy with dog walkers.

Staying at Surrey Hills Yurts puts you right on top of this - you could walk from the site itself. Henfold Lakes is closer still and brilliant if you want a proper base. Pop back for an afternoon when you've done other parks in the area. It's low-key but genuine, and that's exactly what a Surrey nature reserve should be.
