The Debdale

The Debdale is a proper woodland escape just outside Newark - the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. It's a genuine forest rather than a manicured country estate, so expect to get your boots muddy and find the path occasionally overgrown. The walk takes you through mixed woodland with decent views over the surrounding countryside once you push through the thicker sections.

You'll get the most from this if you're someone who enjoys a straightforward woodland ramble without the crowds. It's ideal for families wanting to let kids burn off energy, though younger ones might find the terrain a bit challenging in places. History enthusiasts will appreciate the old earthworks and evidence of medieval land use scattered through the forest - the sort of thing you'd miss if you weren't paying attention.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so come prepared with water and snacks. A couple of hours is realistic for a decent walk without rushing. Free to access, naturally.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Wagtail Country Park is only four miles away, which makes this a useful morning activity before heading back for lunch. Witham Grange Glamping and Secret Garden are equally close. The Debdale works best as part of a wider exploration of the Newark area rather than a destination in itself, but it's genuinely worth including if you're in the region and fancy something with a bit more substance than a flat riverside stroll.
