The Cuckoo Trail - Polegate

A disused railway line turned walking trail cuts through the Sussex countryside near Pevensey, and honestly, it's one of those spots that rewards you without demanding much effort. The Cuckoo Trail runs for about fourteen miles, though most people tackle sections of it rather than the lot - you can pick any stretch that suits your legs and your schedule.

What you get is a dead-flat, well-maintained path through meadows, woodland, and open farmland. Walkers absolutely love it because there's no scrambling, no mud drama when it's been raining, and you can actually chat to whoever you're with without gasping for breath. Cyclists use it too, which keeps things sociable. In spring the wildflowers are decent, and you'll spot rabbits and various birds pottering about if you're quiet.

The beauty is its flexibility. Pop out for a forty-minute stroll or commit to a longer ramble - both work equally well. It's free, obviously. Early morning is best if you want it peaceful; weekends can get a bit busy with the dog-walking brigade.

If you're based at Golden Cross Holiday Park or Fontmills Farm Campsite nearby, the Cuckoo Trail makes for a lovely half-day activity that doesn't compete with other Sussex attractions. You're not going to cry off seeing Pevensey Castle to do this, but it fills a gap nicely between coastal days and bigger outings. Takes as long as you fancy, really.
