The Croft

The Croft is a proper picnic spot just outside Sudbury, the kind of place where you'd actually want to sit down with a sandwich rather than just snap a photo and move on. It's a working countryside area with open space, trees for shade when you need it, and enough room to spread out without feeling packed in with half the county.

The appeal here is straightforward - if you're staying at one of the nearby glamping sites like Lake View Lodges or Cranfield Retreat, this gives you somewhere local to eat lunch without driving miles. Families with young kids will find it adequate; there's space to run about, and it's the kind of low-key spot where nobody minds if someone brings a football. Adults after a proper walk might find it a touch limited on its own, but it works well as a pit stop between exploring Sudbury itself and tackling longer countryside rambles in the area.

There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of - bring your own food and drink, use the bins if they're there, and don't expect facilities. It's free and you can pitch up whenever. Summer's the obvious time, though you'll want to check conditions after rain as it can get muddy.

Not a destination in itself, but genuinely useful if you're based at Woodchests Glamping or The Huts at Woodthorpes and want a casual break with a view of actual countryside instead of another car park.
