The Coronation Stone

You'll find a lump of sandstone sitting in Kingston upon Thames, about three miles from Chessington, and it's genuinely one of England's most historically significant rocks. This is where Saxon kings were crowned - we're talking the 10th century and beyond. It's not flashy. It's not even particularly large. But stand there and you're literally touching something that mattered when England was still figuring out what it meant to be a country.

The stone now lives in a rather unglamorous spot near the town centre, protected by a cage because, well, people are people. You can see it free of charge whenever you fancy - there's no admission, no opening hours to worry about. The actual viewing takes ten minutes maximum, which sounds brief until you realise you're looking at coronation history condensed into one chunk of rock.

Historically minded types will get the most from this. Kids might find it underwhelming unless you're good at storytelling - there's no interactive element, just the stone itself and whatever narrative you bring. It's the sort of thing that rewards knowing a bit about Saxon England beforehand.

If you're staying at Walton on Thames Camping and Caravanning Club Site or over at Chessington World of Adventures Resort, this makes a sensible half-hour detour on your way into town. Don't expect a major attraction - expect a moment of genuine historical weight in an ordinary High Street setting. That's rather the point.
