The Clump

A proper pocket of woodland just outside Loughborough, The Clump is exactly what its name suggests - a dense cluster of trees rising from the Leicestershire countryside. It's not vast, but that's rather the point. You get a genuine forest walk without committing half your day to it.

The paths wind through established woodland with decent tree coverage, and on a grey day it feels properly atmospheric. Walkers and families with older kids will find it worthwhile, though toddlers might find the terrain a bit uneven. There's something satisfying about it being small enough to explore properly in an hour but interesting enough that you won't feel short-changed.

It's free to access and works brilliantly as a half-morning excursion if you're staying at Hill Top Caravan Park or Ragdale Glamping nearby. Neither location is far - under five miles - so it's ideal if you fancy stretching your legs without disappearing for the entire day. The woodland offers a genuine change of pace from open parkland, with decent shade when the sun's strong.

Timing-wise, aim for late morning or early afternoon when the light's proper. Spring's lovely here with bluebells underfoot, but honestly, any time when the weather's dry works fine. It won't blow your mind, but it's a solid addition to a Leicestershire break if you're after something a bit different from the standard caravan park amenities.
