The Clappers Recreation Ground

The Clappers Recreation Ground is a proper slice of Sussex countryside just outside Robertsbridge - the sort of place locals know about but tourists often miss entirely. It's a nature reserve that doesn't try to be anything fancy, just a straightforward stretch of woodland and open grassland where you can actually breathe and let the kids run about without worrying about them crashing into someone else's picnic.

Paths wind through the trees, there are open areas for a kick-about, and if you time it right - early morning or late afternoon - you'll spot deer moving through the undergrowth. It's not dramatic landscape stuff, nothing that's going to make your jaw drop, but it's exactly what you need when you've had too much of everything else.

This works best for families with younger children or anyone after a gentle walk that doesn't demand proper hiking boots and route-finding skills. The ground gets boggy in winter, so autumn is your best bet. Allow a couple of hours maximum unless you're the type who likes to sit on a log for ages just watching birds.
