The Circus - Bath

Bath's Circus is a near-perfect ring of Georgian townhouses built between 1754 and 1768, and it stops you dead when you first walk round it. The three crescents curve in on themselves so completely that you feel almost enclosed, like someone's dropped you into a honeyed stone amphitheatre. There's no traffic cutting through the middle - just a garden, trees, and the sound of your own footsteps echoing off the facades.

What makes it work is the sheer discipline of the design. Every building follows the same pattern: rusticated stonework at street level, sash windows perfectly aligned above, and a continuous balustraded roofline that tricks your eye into seeing it as one vast structure rather than separate homes. You can walk around the full circle in ten minutes, but people usually linger. There are benches tucked into the garden if you want to sit and study how the light hits the Bath stone at different times of day.

Historians and architecture enthusiasts will absolutely lose themselves here - it's a textbook example of mid-18th century urban planning. Families with younger kids might find it a bit quiet for extended visits, though the gardens offer enough space for a run-around. It's free to wander, obviously, and sits just north of the city centre near Montpelier.
