The Church of the Holy Trinity, Blythburgh

The moment you walk through the porch at Blythburgh, you're confronted by a church that feels genuinely grand - all soaring timber roof and light pouring through the clerestory windows. This is the Church of the Holy Trinity, a 15th-century wool church that sits just off the main road between Saxmundham and the coast, and it's one of those places that stops you dead.

It's the scale that gets you first. The nave is vast, the roof beams are extraordinary, and there's real craft visible in every angle - no twee restoration nonsense, just the bare bones of medieval ambition. The angel roof is the thing most people come for, and fair enough: carved wooden angels line the ceiling, though not all of them made it through the centuries intact. There's also a decent font and some interesting wall paintings if you fancy squinting at faded medieval pigment.

Walkers will appreciate this most - it's a proper excuse to stop during a coastal ramble, and the building genuinely rewards twenty minutes of proper looking. Families with younger kids might find it slightly austere; there's not much to do beyond look around. History types will spend longer, especially if church architecture matters to you.

It's free to visit, and admission is casual - just push the door open. There's no cafe or facilities, so plan accordingly.
