The Church of Saint Peter, Tickencote

The Norman doorway at Tickencote stops you dead. Seven concentric arches carved with geometric patterns - chevrons, lozenges, beaks - all converging on a single oak door that's been there since roughly 1160. You're standing in front of one of England's finest Romanesque entrances, tucked away in a village so small most people drive straight past it.

The Church of Saint Peter itself is modest. Fifteenth-century nave, a decent chancel, nothing that screams grandeur. But that doorway owns the space completely. The sheer skill of the stonemasons shows in every line - this wasn't slapdash work. Someone wanted to make a statement about God's house, and they did it in stone.

Pushes through the door and the interior feels properly intimate. Dark, cool, a bit worn in places. The kind of church where you can actually hear yourself think, rather than shuffling around with a hundred other tourists. Allow twenty minutes, half an hour tops if you're the type to read every inscription.

Worth the detour from Stamford? Yes, easily. It's three miles south of town - a short drive or a decent walk if you're based at Stamford Meadows Glamping. The medieval craftsmanship alone justifies it. Admission appears to be free, though the church operates on opening hours that can be changeable, so ring ahead if you're making a special trip. Walkers and architecture types will get far more from this than families with small children, but anyone with an eye for genuine medieval work should see it.
