The Church of Saint Mary Angle

The Church of Saint Mary Angle sits in one of Pembrokeshire's quieter corners, a short drive south from Pembroke. It's a medieval church that's genuinely worth the detour if you're into old Welsh architecture and don't mind a bit of pottering about on country lanes.

What you get is a proper working parish church with real character - the sort of place where you can actually feel how old it is. The interior has that worn, lived-in quality that too many restored churches lose. Medieval stonework, a decent font, and the kind of quiet that makes you want to whisper even though there's no one around. It won't take long - thirty minutes is plenty unless you're seriously into ecclesiastical history.

Families with young kids might find it a bit dull after the initial look-round, but walkers and older children doing a Pembrokeshire cultural tick-off will find it worthwhile. The village of Angle itself is rather appealing if you fancy a walk afterwards - there's a coastal feel to it despite being inland, and several pubs and cafes dotted about.

Access is straightforward and it appears to be free, though opening hours aren't widely advertised so you can't always guarantee getting in. If you're staying at Newton Farm or Point Farm - both within a few miles - it makes a decent rainy-day stop or a gentle morning before hitting the beaches. Don't expect crowds or facilities, but that's rather the point.
