The Chestnut Centre (owls & otters)

The Chestnut Centre sits just outside Buxton and is essentially a working sanctuary for owls and otters - two creatures most of us only glimpse in documentaries, if we're lucky. You walk around outdoor enclosures watching tawny owls, barn owls, and various other raptors, then head over to see the otters doing their thing in purpose-built pools. It's low-key, not a theme park, but that's rather the point.

For families with younger kids, expect a solid hour here, maybe ninety minutes if your lot are genuinely interested in wildlife. Older children and proper nature enthusiasts will get more from it - there's real conservation work happening, not just a petting zoo vibe. The enclosures are well-maintained and the staff know their stuff.

If you're basing yourself at Castleton Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or Lime Tree Holiday Park, the Centre makes for an easy morning or afternoon slot without being a huge commitment. It works well as part of a wider Derbyshire itinerary rather than a full-day destination. Pair it with a walk around Buxton itself or venture into the Peak District proper and you've got a decent day sorted.

The admission fee isn't eye-watering, and opening hours are seasonal - worth checking ahead - but it's the sort of place that rewards turning up with no grand expectations. You'll leave having actually learned something about British wildlife rather than just ticked a box.
