The Chain Walk

Low tide reveals one of Scotland's most thrilling coastal walks, where metal chains bolted into the rock face are your only lifeline above the churning waters. This isn't your typical seaside stroll - you'll be gripping rusted iron links while waves crash mere feet below, following a precarious route around the rocky headland that's been used by locals for generations.

Proper adventurers and teenagers absolutely love the adrenaline rush, though anyone with dodgy knees or a fear of heights should give it a miss. The chains are well-maintained but this is genuinely exposed stuff - one slip and you're in for an unplanned dip in some very cold Scottish sea.

Timing is everything here. You can only tackle the route at low tide, and even then conditions need to be fairly calm. Allow about 45 minutes for the full circuit, though most people spend longer taking photos and working up the courage for the trickier sections. Check tide times religiously - being caught halfway round when the water rises is not an experience you want.
