The Canyoning Company

Getting wet is rather the point at The Canyoning Company, where you're rappelling down waterfall-carved gorges in the Perthshire hills rather than admiring them from a safe distance. This is proper adventure stuff - think rope work, scrambling through rock pools, and genuinely steep drops where you're trusting your harness more than your nerve.

The outfit runs guided expeditions through local canyons, and what you actually do depends on water levels and which route you've booked. Some days it's more scramble than abseil. Other times you're dropping twenty metres into pools so cold they make you gasp. The guides know what they're doing, which matters when you're suspended above a drop in flowing water.

You'll need reasonable fitness and absolutely no fear of heights - this isn't a paddling pool experience. Kids can do it from around age ten onwards depending on the route, though teens and fit adults get the most from it. Allow a half day minimum, probably longer if you're not used to this sort of thing. Bring a towel and something dry to change into afterwards.

It's ideal if you're staying at Erigmore Holiday Park or Inver Mill Farm Caravan Park nearby and want to break up a week of more leisurely park time with something that gets the adrenaline flowing. Couple it with a walk elsewhere in Tayside to balance out the intensity. Not cheap - expect to pay for proper instruction - but you're paying for genuine expertise in a landscape that can be unforgiving. Worth it if you're that way inclined.
