The Bushes

The Bushes is a proper working forest just outside Warminster, the sort of place locals know about but tourists often miss. It's woodland in the truest sense - paths wind through mixed broadleaf and conifer, with the kind of quiet you don't get near towns. There's no visitor centre or tea room, which means it feels like genuine countryside rather than packaged nature.

Walkers will genuinely enjoy this. The terrain is manageable without being dull, and the trees are old enough to create real atmosphere. You'll spot bluebells in spring and plenty of bird life if you're patient. Allow an hour or two depending on how far you fancy going - it's not the sort of place that demands a full morning, but it rewards lingering.

For families with kids, it's less polished than somewhere like Center Parcs Longleat Forest down the road, which might be exactly what you want or exactly what you don't. Young children need proper paths and waymarks - The Bushes has those, but it's not purpose-built for entertainment.

If you're camping at one of the nearby sites - Longleat Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or Hidden Wood Glamping are close - this makes a sensible afternoon walk without the fuss. Free entry and no time limits mean you can show up when the mood takes you. It's the sort of place that's best visited when you're already in the area rather than driven to deliberately, but if you are staying nearby, it's well worth an hour.
