The Burys Field

The Burys Field sits just outside Guildford, a proper slice of Surrey countryside that feels genuinely removed from the town's bustle. It's a nature reserve - grassland and woodland mixed together - where you can actually spot things if you know what you're looking for. Butterflies, birds, the occasional deer if you're lucky.

The walking is straightforward. Well-worn paths crisscross the reserve, nothing too taxing, which makes it ideal for families who don't want a full-day commitment. You're looking at an hour to ninety minutes to get a proper feel for it, less if you're just after a quick leg-stretch. The best time is late spring through early autumn when the wildflowers are doing their thing and the insect life picks up. Winter's quieter, obviously - peaceful but a bit bare.

There's genuine value here for anyone staying at Firesyde, the holiday park nearby. Rather than driving somewhere else for a nature fix, this is literally on your doorstep. It's the kind of place that rewards a slow walk - stop, listen, actually notice things - rather than ticking off views. Not Instagram material, but that's rather the point.

Worth knowing: it's free, and there's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of. Bring binoculars if you're into birds. Wear proper shoes because it can get muddy. Go early in the day to avoid any crowds, though honestly crowds aren't really a problem here.
