The Burghers Of Calais

You'd be forgiven for thinking this bronze monument belongs in France - it does, actually, in Calais itself - but cast your eye towards the Victoria Tower Garden near the Houses of Parliament and there it is: Rodin's masterwork, The Burghers of Calais. This is a replica, mind you, one of several authorised casts the French sculptor had made, and it's absolutely worth the detour if you're already in central London.

The six figures are hunched, resigned, moving towards their fate during the Hundred Years' War. It's visceral stuff - you can feel the despair in their posture, see it in the way their robes drape. The detail is extraordinary. This isn't some sterile history lesson carved in stone; it's raw emotion frozen in bronze. Rodin nailed the psychology of men walking to their probable deaths.

It sits in a small garden space that's free to access, tucked away from the tourist crowds. You'll want twenty minutes minimum to walk around it, read the plaques, absorb what you're looking at. History buffs and anyone with a taste for serious sculpture will get far more from it than casual passers-by. Children find it interesting if they understand the backstory; otherwise it's just bronze blokes to them.

The real pull here is how it anchors a broader Westminster walk. You're minutes from the Houses of Parliament, St James's Park, and countless other London spots. If you're based at Lovat Parks just over a mile away, it's an easy jaunt into the city centre. Don't go out of your way specifically for this, but absolutely include it if you're in the area.
