The Blackpool Tower Ballroom

The moment you step into the Blackpool Tower Ballroom, you understand why this place has been pulling people through its doors since 1894. The sprung dance floor - one of the finest in the world - is real. The Wurlitzer organ still works. And yes, you can actually watch people dancing on it, proper ballroom dancers in sequins and spray tans, gliding across that golden expanse while the orchestra plays.

It's theatrical, a bit daft, utterly enchanting. The decor is all red velvet and gilt, the kind of ornate grandeur you don't see anymore. Even if dancing isn't your thing, standing in the balcony watching the competitions and demonstrations is mesmerizing - these are serious competitors, and the energy is infectious. Kids find it bewildering at first, then get hooked.

You'll want at least ninety minutes here. Longer if you catch a live show or fancy afternoon tea. Admission isn't free, but it's reasonable for what you're getting. Check their website for session times before you go - they vary depending on competitions and events.

From any of the nearby parks - Haven Marton Mere is handiest at just 2.5 miles - you're in the heart of Blackpool's traditional seafront. The Tower Ballroom works well paired with the Pleasure Beach or a proper fish and chip supper on the prom. It's theatrical without being pretentious, and genuinely fun. Not trying too hard to be cool, which is exactly why it works.
