The Bellwether Gallery

Just outside Hexham, this contemporary art space punches well above its weight for a rural Northumberland venue. The Bellwether Gallery focuses on work by emerging and established artists, with rotating exhibitions that actually make you stop and think rather than shuffle through in twenty minutes.

The space itself is intimate without feeling cramped. High ceilings, decent lighting, and enough room to step back and really look at pieces without bumping into other visitors. It's the sort of place where you genuinely discover something new each visit, or at least catch an artist before they get picked up by London galleries.

Worth stopping if you're base camping nearby - Hesleyside Huts is barely a mile away, and Bellingham Camping sits just as close. Neither adds much to a day out, mind you. The gallery works best if you're already exploring this part of the Tyne Valley, perhaps combining it with a walk or a pub stop in Hexham town centre.

Allocation maybe an hour, depending on what's on. Check ahead before you visit - the programme changes regularly and you don't want to catch a period between shows. It's the kind of place that rewards curiosity rather than demands it. If contemporary art leaves you cold, don't force it. But if you're staying in one of the glamping spots or campsites dotted around here, it makes for a cracking rainy afternoon or a proper cultural break from countryside tramping.
