The Seat

The Seat sits just outside Hexham, a straightforward fell walk that rewards effort with proper views across Northumberland. It's not a dramatic peak - more of a solid viewpoint that locals know well and visitors often miss. The climb's manageable, maybe twenty minutes from the car park depending on fitness, and the path is clear enough though it can get boggy after rain.

From the top you're looking out over the Tyne valley and beyond. On a decent day you can see for miles. On a grey one, which is fairly common round here, you're in the clouds wondering why you bothered. That's not shade though - there's something satisfying about standing up there in the drizzle watching the landscape shift underneath.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's a proper leg-stretcher without being punishing, and combines well with exploring Hexham town itself - lovely medieval abbey, decent cafes, reasonable shops. If you're based at one of the nearby campsite options like Bellingham or Demesne Farm, it's an easy afternoon outing that doesn't demand a full day commitment.

Families with older kids will manage it fine. Younger ones might find it a bit of a slog for limited payoff - there's not much to do once you're up there except stand around looking at views. Solo walkers and photography types will appreciate it more. The boggy sections are annoying but not treacherous. Allow an hour round trip including time at the top.
