The Beacon

The Beacon sits on high ground above Bodmin, giving you proper views across Cornwall's inland plateau. It's a nature reserve where you can actually walk - moorland paths that take you through heather and gorse, with the kind of openness you don't get in the wooded valleys further south.

What you're looking at is Bronze Age landscape. There's history embedded in the hills here, though The Beacon itself is more about the walking than any visitor centre or interpretation. Bring binoculars if you're keen on birds - you'll see more than enough to justify the effort. The views alone make the short climb worthwhile, especially on clear days when you can pick out landmarks all the way to the coast.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not demanding - thirty minutes to an hour depending on pace - but it requires actual legs and an interest in moorland. Kids past about seven can manage it fine; younger ones might find it a bit repetitive. The ground can be boggy in winter, so pick your season carefully.

Free to access, which is the right price for what it is. You're camped nearby at Mena Farm or The Camping Field, both within striking distance - it makes an excellent morning walk before heading elsewhere. The Beacon works best as part of a bigger Bodmin exploration rather than a destination in itself.
