The Basins

The Basins near Taunton is a proper water feature - basically a series of shallow lakes that sit alongside the Grand Western Canal. It's not dramatic or particularly wild, but it's genuinely peaceful, especially if you're staying at Waterrow Touring Park just down the road.

You can walk the canal towpath here without fighting crowds. The water's clear enough to spot fish, and it's the kind of place where you might see a heron if you're patient. The surrounding landscape is all Somerset levels - flat, open, unremarkable to be honest - but that's exactly why it works. There's space to breathe.

This appeals mainly to walkers and canal enthusiasts rather than thrill-seekers. Kids might manage a gentle hour here if they're the type to skip stones and look for dragonflies, but they won't be entertained for half a day. It's better as a leg-stretch between other things than a destination in itself.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted - park near the canal and walk. Best visited in warmer months when the water doesn't look quite so grey and you're more likely to see wildlife. If you're based at Waterrow, it's an easy bike ride or short drive to break up a touring holiday. Combine it with a walk along more of the Grand Western Canal towards Tiverton for a proper afternoon out.
