The Bar (sand & shingle) tidal area

The Bar is one of those tidal beaches that rewards you for checking the tide times before you head down. It's a dramatic stretch of sand and shingle where the water recedes properly at low tide, leaving you with actual room to breathe and walk without queuing behind other families. The shingle can be a bit rough underfoot - proper ankle-turner stuff if you're not careful - but the sand underneath is firm and good for building with kids or just walking the length of it without sinking up to your ankles.

This works best for families with older children and keen beach walkers rather than toddlers who need easy access. You'll get a solid couple of hours here at low tide, maybe three if you're the type who likes to hunt for shells and skip stones. The backdrop is proper Cornish coastline - cliffs rising up behind you, and on a clear day the views along the shore are genuinely worth the trip.

It's free to visit, obviously, and you just time your arrival around the tides. Summer weekends get busy, but off-season or early morning you'll have it nearly to yourself. If you're staying at The Secret Garden Glamping nearby, this is a perfectly walkable addition to your itinerary without being the main event. Bring proper shoes, not flip-flops. The shingle isn't forgiving.
