The Arch

The Arch is a gallery space in Ware that punches above its weight for a market town. You'll find contemporary art exhibitions here - the kind of place where local artists sit alongside touring shows, so it's never quite the same visit twice. The setting itself is half the appeal: converted industrial space with those lovely high ceilings and actual character, not a white cube pretending to be London.

It works best if you're genuinely interested in what's on rather than just killing an hour. Check what's showing before you go - some exhibitions will grip you, others less so. The staff know their stuff and aren't the po-faced sort you sometimes get in galleries. Plan for 45 minutes to an hour if you're taking it seriously, less if you're just browsing.

Families with teenagers who actually like art should come. Younger kids will get bored unless there's something interactive on. History types won't find much here - this is contemporary work, not heritage.

Ware itself is pleasant enough for a wander - decent high street, the Priory Park near the town centre if you need a green space break. If you're staying at Toad Abode just over the road, The Arch is a proper quick detour. The Wild Retreat at Redricks Lake is a bit further out, but still worth timing a gallery visit around if something exceptional is on.
