The Anchorage

The Anchorage sits in Gairloch, a proper artistic space that punches above its weight. You walk in expecting a small-town gallery and find work that actually makes you stop and look - contemporary Scottish art mixed with local talent, the kind of place that reminds you why you bothered driving out to the Highlands in the first place.

It's not enormous, which is fine. You'll spend a good hour here if you're genuinely interested, maybe thirty minutes if you're just passing through. The staff know what they're talking about rather than just standing there, and there's usually something on rotation so it doesn't feel stale if you're staying in the area for a week.

Families with older kids will get more from it than the under-eights crowd - it requires a bit of attention rather than being interactive. But it's the sort of place that breaks up a caravan holiday brilliantly. You're staying at Sands Caravan & Camping just down the road, the weather's turned a bit dreich, and this gives you a proper morning without needing to trek off to Fort William or wherever.

Gairloch itself is worth a wander after - the seafront's genuinely pleasant and there's a decent chippy. The gallery ties in well with a Highland fortnight if you're mixing outdoor pursuits with cultural bits. Worth checking ahead for opening times and any entry fee, but the kind of spot that rewards turning up.
