A gnarled tree standing alone in Staffordshire countryside - that's The Alder Tree, though calling it a tourist attraction might be generous. What makes it worth a detour depends entirely on whether you're the type who stops the car for things with centuries of stories attached.

The tree itself is ancient, a proper survivor that's been here far longer than most of us will be. It's the sort of landmark that once mattered enormously to locals - meeting points, boundary markers, shelter in storms - things we've largely forgotten how to value. Standing near Burton-on-Trent, it's more of a pilgrimage for history enthusiasts than a destination in itself. There's no visitor centre, no interpretive board spelling everything out, which is either refreshing or frustrating depending on your mood.

Family groups with young kids might find a five-minute stop adequate. Walkers exploring the area will appreciate it as a waypoint rather than a destination. Local historians will get something from the experience, though you'll want to research beforehand to understand what you're looking at.

It's free, obviously, and accessible - though facilities are non-existent. Allow fifteen minutes maximum, unless you're genuinely fascinated by dendrochronology and local lore. Timing doesn't matter, though autumn when the light sits low through the branches is undeniably better looking.
