Tewfill Hill

Getting to the top of Tewfill Hill from Appleby-in-Westmorland is a decent afternoon's work, but it rewards you with proper Pennine views across open moorland. The walk itself is straightforward enough - nothing technical, just steady uphill through rough grassland with the kind of wind that makes you lean forward slightly as you climb. Once you're up there, you can see for miles across Westmorland, which on a clear day stretches all the way to the Lake District fells on the western horizon.

It's the sort of place that appeals to walkers rather than casual strollers. Kids will manage it fine if they're used to hills, but there's not much at the summit itself - just views and a sense of being somewhere wild. Allow two hours from town for a leisurely round trip, longer if you're combining it with other peaks in the range.

The nearest town, Appleby-in-Westmorland, sits in a valley below, which means it's a genuine climb rather than a gentle ramble. Don't bother coming here on a grey, clammy day when visibility drops to fifty metres - the whole point is the outlook. Spring and autumn are best: you'll dodge summer holiday crowds and winter mud.
