Testwood Lakes Nature Reserve

Three interconnected lakes sit just outside Ashurst, surrounded by woodland that feels genuinely wild. Testwood Lakes Nature Reserve is less manicured than your typical country park - the water attracts serious birdwatchers and casual walkers in equal measure, depending on the season. The whole thing is free to explore, though you'll want sturdy boots if it's been wet. Allow a couple of hours for a proper walk round the perimeter, maybe three if you're stopping to sketch or photograph. Families with younger children might find it a bit too muddy and featureless for a full afternoon, but anyone keen on spotting waterfowl or just needing a quiet woodland walk will be content. The lakes themselves are the draw - no cafes, no facilities, no nonsense. That's partly the appeal. Spring brings migrants, autumn sees the water busy with ducks. Winter's bleak but gives you better sightlines through the bare trees. It's the sort of place that rewards returning at different times of year rather than a one-off visit. If you're camping at Ashurst Campsite just down the road, it's an easy morning or late-afternoon stroll. Matley Wood and Green Hill Farm are a touch further but equally convenient. The reserve slots neatly into a wider New Forest exploration rather than being a destination in itself - pair it with market towns or longer forest walks for a proper day out.
