Testwood Lake

Testwood Lake sits just outside Ashurst, a quiet water body that draws walkers and bird-watchers rather than crowds. It's the sort of place you stumble upon while exploring the New Forest fringes - nothing grand, just a proper lake with paths round it and decent views across the water if the light's right.

The walk itself takes about an hour if you fancy the full circuit, though plenty of people just do half and head back. You'll see waterfowl throughout the year, and in autumn the reflections are particularly good. It's free to visit and there's parking nearby, which helps. Don't expect facilities or manicured gardens - this is working landscape stuff, somewhat wild and definitely local.

Families with young kids might find it a bit thin on drama after thirty minutes, unless they're genuinely keen on spotting birds. Older children and adults who actually enjoy a walk without theme parks or playgrounds will get on much better here. It works well as a morning outing if you're camped at Ashurst Campsite or any of the other sites within six miles - Matley Wood or Green Hill Farm would make decent bases if you're planning a few days exploring the area.

Go midweek if you can. Weekends bring more people, and honestly the appeal of Testwood Lake is its quietness. The New Forest proper is just down the road if you want something with more going on, but this is worth the detour if you like your nature undressed.
