TCM Baptist Church

The Baptist Chapel on Tentercroft Street isn't the sort of place that makes it onto postcards, but it's exactly the kind of church that rewards a quiet wander if you're staying in the Lincoln area. Built in the 19th century, it's a straightforward brick building with the sort of earnest, unpretentious character that defines Nonconformist architecture - all function, very little fuss.

Inside, the chapel retains original features that tell you plenty about how these communities worshipped. Simple wooden pews, high ceilings, good natural light through tall windows. It's the kind of place where you can actually sense how congregations gathered here generation after generation, without any of the grandeur you'd find in the cathedral a short walk away.

This works best for history enthusiasts and anyone interested in religious architecture beyond the obvious cathedral trail. You won't need more than 20 minutes, and it slots neatly into a half-day exploring Lincoln's Georgian streets and the Roman sites. If you're camped at Hartsholme Country Park or South Cliff Caravan Site - both excellent bases just outside town - it's a straightforward drive in.

Check ahead for opening times, as it's not staffed daily. Free to visit, and the quietness is actually part of the appeal. Lincoln's cathedral gets the crowds; this chapel gets the thoughtful visitor. That's a fair trade.
