Tanfield Railway (East Tanfield Station)

The Tanfield Railway sits near Stanley in Tyne and Wear, running vintage steam trains along a restored stretch of Victorian track. It's a working heritage railway where you can actually climb aboard and rattle through the countryside the way your great-grandparents might have done - all billowing smoke, rhythmic clatter, and proper nostalgia. The line operates seasonally, so check ahead before making the trip.

This is absolutely brilliant for railway enthusiasts and families with children old enough to sit still for an hour or so. Adults tend to get genuinely absorbed in the engineering side of things; kids love the theatre of it all - the steam, the uniforms, the sensation of actual movement without an engine roaring underneath. Younger children might find a full journey a bit much, but there's usually enough happening to keep them occupied.

Admission isn't free, but the cost is reasonable for what you get. Allow a couple of hours minimum to make it worthwhile - you'll want time to look around the station buildings and perhaps grab a drink before boarding. The railway's got real character; it's not a theme park recreation but an actual working operation.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Beamish Glamping is excellent and only 2.5 miles away - the railway makes for a solid half-day activity. Beamish Museum is practically on the doorstep too, so you could combine the two. Just don't expect luxury refreshments; bring a packed lunch if you're fussy.
