Tamar Valley Methodist Church

The modest white-rendered chapel sitting above the Tamar Valley near Tavistock is one of those quiet corners you stumble upon by accident while driving through Devon's back roads. It's a proper working Methodist church, nothing flashy, but there's something genuinely moving about the simplicity of it all - plain wooden pews, large windows letting light flood across the interior, the kind of place where the building itself seems to take a breath.

Unless you're doing a church trail or you're interested in Nonconformist architecture, this won't keep you for more than thirty minutes. But if you're the sort who finds peace in these small stone buildings, or you're keen on how ordinary people worshipped away from the grand Anglican establishments, it's worth the minor detour off the Tavistock road. The setting matters too - the valley views around it are proper lovely, especially on a clear afternoon.

The real pull here is the location. It works brilliantly as a walking break if you're based at either Woodovis or Sunnyside - both excellent glamping spots just a couple of miles away. Park up near the church, stretch your legs around the valley, then head back to Tavistock for a decent pub lunch. Families with older kids might appreciate the quietness; anything under ten will probably get bored fairly quickly. Free to wander in most times, though you'll want to check locally before making a specific trip. Go for the landscape and the sense of discovery rather than expecting architectural drama.
