Talargoch Lead Mine - Talargoch Shaft

You'll find the shaft entrance down a narrow path just inland from Rhyl, and it's immediately obvious why lead miners chose this spot - the ground rises sharply and the whole hillside tells the story of three centuries of digging. Talargoch is one of Wales' most important lead mines, worked hard from the 1600s right through to the 1880s, and what you're looking at now is serious industrial archaeology.

The main draw is the shaft itself - a proper vertical drop that's been partially excavated and made safer for visitors, though you won't be abseiling down anytime soon. What makes it work is wandering the site and spotting the old spoil heaps, the collapsed structures, and imagining the sheer graft that went into extracting ore from deep underground. It's not a museum with interpretation boards at every turn, so you need a bit of patience and curiosity.

History enthusiasts will find it genuinely rewarding. Families with older kids who can handle uneven ground might enjoy it as a change from beach days, though it won't hold attention for more than ninety minutes. Younger children could find it a bit dull. Walkers will appreciate the views across the valleys.

If you're staying at Golden Sands or one of the other nearby holiday parks, it's a decent afternoon detour - close enough not to eat up half your day, different enough from the usual seaside routine. Go when the ground's dry though; after rain it becomes properly muddy and significantly less pleasant.
